It felt like a "hidden" mechanic in NMH1, like some kind of secret feature you'd trigger by accident and get dazzled by, and that you'd need a friend or someone on a message board to tell you about. I love how much more of a deliberate mechanic it is this time around. I wonder what game was first to the concept DMC3 and Viewtiful Joe had time slowing mechanics but nothing quite so specific as being activated on a dodge. Great contrast to how "sandy" and gritty NMH2 looked.Ĭlick to shrink. It's funny how the other day I was thinking that No More Heroes kinda beat Bayonetta to the whole "slow motion after perfect dodge" thing in a way. I love this cold, blue, seaside vibe to it. You can also basically have enemies in perpetual stun lock throw mode if you roll the slash reel that enables it (Travis' hands being on fire).Īlso, is it just me or do some of the environments have some Killer7 energy to it? The structure that they battle near almost reminded me of the First Life HQ for some reason. It was sort of shown in the Treehouse footage but one of Travis' unlockable abilities is a Devil May Cry-esque million stab which Travis can seemingly do after an attack if the player spams the attack button. There's some new moves being exhibited here too. No More Heroes still has some of the most satisfying feedback to combat in general thanks to VA and good sound design. I like how Jeane provides color commentary, the "right on!" is supposed to be her. There's a few more enemies beyond that which have been exhibited and teased on the site, so I like the enemy variety this time since that's something NMH1 and 2 struggled with at times, but which TSA got better about. When Travis attacks that particular enemy somewhat early in the clip, it looks like a purple burst manages to have Travis enter dark step mode, so I wonder whether or not there's some sort of riposte mechanic on top of the perfect dodges (dark step is predominantly triggered via perfect dodging as opposed to how it was in NMH1). Unlike NMH1 and 2, it doesn't look like projectile enemies are using hitscan attacks anymore (thank god). The third ones, based on older screens, are projectile enemies. The second look to basically be the equivalent of the beam katana enemies from the first game as they're far more resilient to getting hitstunned, can do sliding attacks from a distance, can even leap over Travis to do jumping attacks, and are seemingly aggressive enough that you probably initiate sword clashes against them more frequently. The first ones are basically standard fodder with very telegraphed attacks, they don't offer much resistance. For fans of Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, the Death Glove that provides a teleporting dropkick will make its return. Some thoughts about the combat based on these clips, we've seen three prominent enemy varieties so far the white aliens with the lances, the motorcycle aliens with the batons, and those big bulky Starmen floating things. No More Heroes 3 will also see the return of a number of different earthlings, including agent Sylvia Christel, Shinobu, Bad Girl, and the cat Jeane.
